Church News
Edie Newton isn't very well at all with one thing and another.
Winnie Outhwaite paid another visit to hospital but not to stay.
I wonder if it is a good thing to go on holiday? Sharon Brown certainly doesn't recommend being bitten by American mosquitos (they only go after sweet meat Sharon). And now Heather Poole has come home with a dislocated finger. Who will be next if you believe things go in threes?
Not on holiday, but in town Eileen Watson, who is just getting over a shoulder operation, had a fall and ended up with bruised ribs.
Congratulations and a belated happy 80th birthday to Kath Page, who celebrated her birthday in July.
Doesn't the Church look good now with its newly painted windows and doors and the smart new signs. And gradually, thanks to the 'Railway Children' we are getting the paint work freshened up inside too. Could the next project to think about be the garden and down the back of the Church?

SOCIAL AND PUBLICITY
A big THANK YOU to all who helped at the Model Railway Exhibition, which raised a magnificent £767.20. We didn't realise until too late for the last magazine, that this year was our 10th year with trains-buses-planes-boats & dolls' houses; the saying goes that "time flies when you're enjoying yourselves", and we really do enjoy it although it is hard work. Our 'Railway Children' have the responsibility of organising the layouts now and we thank them for that, also for supplying us with salad stuff for the refreshments, they really are a good set of lads.
September 27th/28th is our 'Harvest Weekend' with a difference which will be for HOPE 08. Saturday 27th we are to have a Murder Mystery with a supper, and on Sunday we are asked to bring gifts for our Shoebox Appeal, e.g. school writing materials, note pads, games, hats, gloves, etc., so long as they will fit into a shoe box and suit children from infants to teenagers, male and female.

LADIES FELLOWSHIP
We hope you all enjoyed our little outing in August. It was quite a good day for travelling, not too hot, and we had a lovely tea made by a friendly group of ladies at Menston Methodist Church.
Now to move into another season of meetings; we commence on Monday, September 8th with a talk from our own Minister, Rev. Bob Jones, and we may as well start as we mean to go on with a light lunch.
As some of you know, from time to time we support Mikoroshoni, a school in Kenya, so on Monday September 22nd we are to have a Bring & Buy morning with all proceeds going to them.
If anyone would like to join us, we are a friendly group of ladies who meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month 10.30am - 12 ish. We usually manage a light lunch at least once a month. The subscription for the year is still only £1 and we pay 50p per meeting for tea and biscuits. We welcomed two or three new members last year plus visitors on a one off basis, so if you feel you would like to join us, you are more than welcome.

BACK TO SCHOOL - It doesn't seem long since the children broke up, anyway, whether you are starting play school, going to infants (Big school) moving into Juniors, moving on to secondary school or higher still to College or University, we hope you all settle in well and enjoy yourselves, just do your best we are thinking of you.

THANKYOU
I would like to say a big thank you to the ladies who arranged the fellowship outing. Everything about it was a delight, a most interesting ride on the coach by a good driver Neil, a warm welcome from the ladies of Menston Chapel who made us a lovely high tea. Looking round the Chapel and travelling on roads I had never been on before added to the enjoyment of the day.

I would like to thank the Ladies Fellowship Committee for arranging the outing for us. I am sure everyone enjoyed it and the meal as well. The weather was not too bad and we certainly covered a good interesting area on our travels.
Also, I would like to thank them for all they do for us - arranging speakers, lunches, etc., and Eileen our chair lady for leading us so well.
Look forward to meeting again on the 8th September.
M.S.

MISSING
Have you borrowed or do you know the whereabouts of the small 'melamine' trays which seem to have disappeared from the kitchen at Church?

Murder/Mystery evening on Saturday 27th September
As part of our HOPE 08 outreach and for one night only we present ...
a murder/mystery night
MURDER ON MAUI
On Saturday 27th September at 7.00p.m. you are invited to one of Harold A. Logan's famous luaus. It is also a fundaraiser for HAAL, the Hawaiian Association of Authentic Laeis. Get ready to party but know this: trouble is brewing for Mr. Logan.
Your mission, should you accept it, is to solve a murder (or two). Are you up to the challenge?
If you are, come and join us. Please invite your friends and family. You will all be the detectives. It would be good if you could come dressed in Hawaiian costume or brightly coloured summer clothes.
Tickets for a 2 course meal and fun are £3 or £2 for children under 12
Please let Norma know a.s.a.p. to help with catering.
Harvest Festival Sunday 28th September
This year we are collecting for the Christmas shoe-box appeal (see next item for more info).
If you can, please bring a shoe box ready prepared or Christmas paper, toys, educational supplies and items to eat or wear as suggested in the leaflets at the back of the church. They have lots of ideas.
SAMARITANS PURSE - OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
This year we are registered as a local DROP OFF POINT for individuals and small groups.
Last year we managed to collect over 120 boxes from the church alone. As part of our HOPE 2008 outreach we are hoping to get more members of our local community involved.
Please pick up as many leaflets as you can from the back of the church and post them through your neighbours' letter-boxes. How about giving them to friends and families, local businesses and anyone else you think might be interested? Let's advertise ourselves, let's bring hope and a smile to children in need and shine a light for Jesus in our church and our community.
To do this shoe-boxes are urgently needed
On Monday October 27th at 7.30p.m. we will be meeting to fill as many shoe-boxes as possible with donated items. Please come and help. We had such a great time together last year.
Any ideas or questions please see Norma.

WINDOWS
The three stained glass windows at the rear of the Church are of modern stained glass and were donated.
"To the Glory of God and in loving Memory of
Bennett and Elizabeth Ann Pricket and Bennett Pricket,
Beloved Parents and brother of Rose E. Mawson 1968"
The theme of the windows is service.
The window on the left depicts Dorcas, a seller of purple cloth, whose story is told in the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 16, verses 14-16.
The right hand window depicts Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a very talented man. He was an eminent Church Organist and an authority on the music of Bach. He was also an outstanding theologian.
Albert Schweitzer, not being satisfied with his achievements in music and theology, trained to be a doctor. After obtaining his medical degrees, he set up a hospital in Lambarene in Equitorial Africa where he treated and cared for people with Leprosy.
The centre window shows our Lord washing the feet of his disciples. The quotation reads "I am among you as one who serves" (Luke 12 v. 27).

HELP
Can you spare just two hours a month to help the poor. The fairtrade shop in town is coming into the exciting autumn/Christmas season and we are desperate for new helpers so we can help more people. PLEASE pick up your phone to Carmen (manager) 562064 or Mary Tennyson, 563459 or call in at St. Peter's Porch and give your name in. It is an interesting job and training is given. Many thanks. M.T.

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOXES
When I spoke to the regional Organiser of Samaritans Purse last year, she said that there was always a great demand for hats, gloves and scarves. I can see that, as our boxes went to Bosnia and Belarus brrr. Apparently 20,000 boxes left from warehouses at Leeds/Bradford alone.
She asked if we can start knitting now.
I've decided that it's time I see if I can remember how to knit. Has anyone got a very easy pattern that I can begin with?

HOPE 2008
in our villages, towns and cities
Many Christians all over the UK are doing fantastic work in their communities, serving and loving those around them. HOPE2008 is about providing resources and encouragement to motivate and enable every church, every denomination and every person to reach the place where they live in the name of Jesus. I am looking for ideas as to how we can reach our neighbourhood, whether it's giving out leaflets for Operation Christmas Child or even free Easter Eggs as we have before, anything that will remind our neighbourhood that we are here worshipping and serving Jesus.
Please come and talk to me about it or, better still, if you are on the internet, got to www.hope08.com and be inspired. Don't let 2008 go by without getting involved. Your input could be very valuable.
No idea too small.

APPEAL
Every year Harrogate Hospital and Community Friends get requests from both hospital wards and community health teams for assistance in buying equipment that will benefit patients both in hospital and at home. Recent purchases have varied widely from small pieces of equipment such as easy access examination couches, wheelchairs etc., to much larger and more technical equipment.
Recently only about one quarter of requests have been able to be funded. With the amalgamation of the Primary Care trusts in this area, Harrogate district has incurred a huge debt through no fault of its own and is subject to funding constraints.
Because of this the Friends have decided to step up the fundraising efforts and under this initiative several local auction houses have offered help and will auction donated items on the Friends' behalf for no fees or greatly reduced fees.
Committee member, Brenda Dixon, hopes to hear on 01423 863378 from people with suitable items for auction: e.g. clocks, pictures, mirrors, jewellery, small items of furniture or even larger items if they meet current safety requirements.
Please, when you are spring-cleaning this year, look in your cupboards and see if you have anything to donate. If you do, please contact Brenda Dixon to arrange collection.
